When working with a standard computer keyboard and mouse, the bones of the forearm are in an unnaturally crossed position, leading to pain and fatigue throughout the forearm even after a short time. Prolonged use of such a keyboard can lead to chronic problems requiring medical attention.

Carpal tunnel syndrome—a modern health problem.

The use of standard office keyboards and mice is also associated with a modern computer-related condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome (also called compression syndrome or RSI). This condition involves compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, located in the wrist. The median nerve, which passes through this tunnel, transmits impulses from the brain to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger. In healthy people who do not overuse their wrists, the carpal tunnel provides sufficient space for the median nerve to pass through, ensuring that the fingers receive an adequate supply of nerve impulses from the brain; thus, their full functionality and sensitivity are preserved.

The main symptoms of this syndrome include tingling and pain in the first three fingers (thumb, index finger, and middle finger), resembling the sensation of having your hand pinned under something. There is also reduced sensitivity in the hand, manifested by a diminished ability to grip firmly and general clumsiness of the hand (which, in the final stage, can lead to dropping objects). Symptoms often manifest even at rest, and the pain can radiate up to the forearm and shoulder. In the early stages, the solution is simple—immediately stop using a standard computer mouse and exercise your hand regularly. In the advanced stage, endoscopic surgery on the wrist is necessary to release the carpal tunnel and increase its patency. When the syndrome is fully developed, the wrist ligaments must be cut to relieve pressure on the nerve.

According to the National Institute of Public Health (SZÚ), this is the most common occupational disease in the Czech Republic, and the number of cases is rising every year.

All of these problems can be easily prevented by using an ergonomic keyboard and a vertical mouse, which allow the user’s hand and forearm to remain in a natural position, preventing unnatural crossing of tendons and bones as well as compression of the median nerve in the wrist.
