How does the barometer work?

A mechanical barometer or strain gauge, also known as an aneroid, works on the following principle: when the air pressure in the environment rises, the metal aneroid box inside the gauge is compressed; if it falls, it is expanded. These fluctuations are transmitted by a set of levers on the needle. The internal mechanism, however, has its friction surfaces and transmission resistance, and therefore every mechanical barometer has its own internal hysteresis, which manifests itself in a certain delay of the pointer. This is also why it is necessary to tap the instrument to get an accurate instantaneous atmospheric pressure reading.
