Ethernet channel
HDMI 1.40 specifications add a data, Fast Ethernet (100Mbit/s) channel to the HDMI cable for high-speed bi-directional communication. This allows devices with an Internet connection and HDMI to share an Internet connection with other HDMI devices. It also enables content sharing between multiple HDMI devices. All without the need for an additional separate Ethernet cable.

The new specifications add a channel for backward communication. This is responsible for two-way audio data transfer. It allows the HDTV to send the audio stream to the A/V receiver via HDMI cable, reducing the number of cables needed.
